Throughout my career, whenever a situation, experience or conversation caused me to stop and think more deeply, I often found myself putting pen to paper. Writing became a way of making sense of my thoughts, challenging my assumptions and better understanding what leadership looks and feels like in the real world.

Since 2015, I have shared many of these reflections through articles published on LinkedIn. They were never intended to provide definitive answers or present leadership as a neat collection of theories and models. Rather, they were observations from the coal face – lessons, questions and reflections shaped by the everyday realities of leading, working with people and continually learning along the way.

In a world that often asks leaders to conform, to fix, to accelerate, the leaders needed most are those who slow down, stay human, and lead with their eyes open and their hearts engaged.

Over the course of my career to date, I have been privileged to lead a business, lead teams, navigate complex workplace dynamics, and witness for myself the realities of leadership in action. Looking back now, I can see that I have pretty much led from every chair. These experiences have shaped my understanding of what it means to lead, not just from a position of authority, but from a place of curiosity, compassion, and conviction.

This book is a collection of those lessons. It is not a thesis on leadership theory, nor is it a manual of quick fixes. Rather, it is a practitioner’s journey through the evolving landscape of leadership, a journey rooted in formal learning and shaped by lived experience. Why This Book and Why Now

The world we live in today is more complex, unpredictable, and interconnected than ever before. Global pandemics, economic upheavals, technological disruption, and the urgent challenges of climate change have all underscored the need for leaders who are not only competent but also adaptable, empathetic, and grounded in reality.

Academic theories of leadership provide valuable frameworks, but the realities of the modern workplace often demand something more: the ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice, to make decisions amid uncertainty, and to inspire others not just with words but with consistent action.

As I have written and reflected over the years, I have come to believe that the most influential leaders are those who are willing to learn about themselves, about others, and about the systems in which they work. They are the ones who ask tough questions, who challenge assumptions, and who are not afraid to admit when they don’t have all the answers. They are, above all, human.
