Appreciative Coaching

Appreciative coaching is described as a shared experience between coach and client. Together with the coach, the client will work on a new plan for the future, based on strategies and supporting actions aimed at success. The relationship between the two is one of discovery, appreciation and action, while being mindful of the five primary principles of appreciate inquiry.

” Appreciative Inquiry pays attention to the best in us, not the worst; to our strengths, not our weaknesses; to possibility thinking, not problem thinking. “

– Robyn Stratton-Berkessel –

Positivity

Positive questions enable positive change – encouragement, personal support and other forms of positive affect can have a pivotal and empowering effect on the way in which a person goes about embracing growth and enacting change.

Language

The words we use create the world we work and live in – people construct their understanding of reality through language and conversations. Reality is therefore subjective, not objective. Here, the narrative one has of oneself is often used in order to justify certain actions and beliefs about the world.

Stories

Our lives are expressed through the stories we tell – life can be understood as though it is a narrative. Like poetry and prose, these narratives ignite creativity allowing the processing of subjective feelings and emotions surrounding a situation, not just the gritty facts.

Questions

The simple act of inquiry creates change – questions hold the potential to trigger immediate change. For instance, asking, with genuine curiosity and interest, why a person operates in a given way, will cause a person to reflect on whether there is better, faster, and less stressful ways of proceeding with things.

Imagination

Our imagination drives action – a vivid image of an internalised goal or vision is what inspires and motivates people to do things and improve themselves.  If the image is framed in a positive and powerful fashion, it is likely that it will have a strong positive effect on an individual’s present, informing the next moves they will make.
